Official Susan B Anthony Museum & House

Vandals damaged and stripped the ranch over the years it was left unattended. Despite its oversized fame, it's a modest-sized house, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a 300-degree-plus view of the city of Los Angeles. Designed by Pierre Koenig in 1959 from a concept developed by the house's owner Buck Stahl, it's also called Case Study House #22. You've seen this iconic mid-century house and its view countless times in films, advertisements, and magazines. It's one of my favorite places to go in LA and especially beautiful at twlight. Schindler's private residence is open to the public several days a week, and no reservations are required.

Ending breast cancer needs

Marshall E. J. Keeney unhappily came to arrest Anthony for that act of civil disobedience. At the trial, she was found guilty of voting illegally, though her sentence, a $100 fine, was never enforced. In 1890, the National Woman Suffrage Association merged with the American Woman Suffrage Association, which argued for state-by-state enfranchisement of women (among other differences). Elizabeth Cady Stanton was the first president of the new group, the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), but Anthony was effectively its leader. Carrie Chapman Catt replaced Anthony as president of the organization when she retired in 1900.

Early Life

Access to the house is through the Susan B. Anthony Museum entrance at 19 Madison Street. The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House is supported primarily through the contributions of its members and donors. It is not affiliated with other organizations bearing Anthony’s name. With the acquisition of these parcels, we are moving this plan a big step closer to reality. We have partnered with Solid Light, Inc., a museum design firm that has created innovative museum spaces such as the American Civil War Museum and the Discovery Park of America. Just as Susan B. Anthony valued the power of like-minded people working together for a common goal, we are pleased to partner with this team of professionals to move us closer to our goal.

Wild Life: Synchronized Coral Spawning

The mission of the Susan B. Anthony House is to keep Susan B. Anthony's vision alive and relevant. Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony shared a great friendship. Douglass escaped from slavery in Maryland as a young man and became one of the most prominent leaders of the abolitionist movement. He was also a strong proponent of women’s rights and attended the Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls in 1848. He and Anthony met that same year and became co-workers for both causes. Despite differences and disagreements along the way, Douglass and Anthony remained friends until his death in 1895.

Moving out into the hallway, Jo Ann switched with Marlene, who took me to the other rooms of the house. In the bathroom, we encountered old pharmacy equipment, a photo of 1916 downtown Yorba Linda and a claw-footed bathtub from the Fullerton Hotel. Signs that read, “Measles Keep Out” and “Chicken Pox Keep Out” hung on one wall by the toilet. “Back in the old days, if a child was ill, they could not allow the neighbors in,” said Marlene. John’s daughter, Susanna Bixby Bryant, was a young married woman living in Los Angeles when she took control of the property. Around 1911, she became interested in having a place to stay when she visited the ranch, so she built the 2,500 square foot house that still stands today.

The same defiance that made Budapest a feminist hero in the ’70s has made her a divisive figure for many modern witches today. In 2011, attendees at a pagan conference staged a protest when she held a self-blessing ritual, performed in the nude, and barred transgender women, as well as men, from participating. There are altars in the living room and kitchen, and high on the wall in the hallway hang three identical masks — fierce female faces with black teeth bared and black snakes dangling down like hair.

“When the kids come on tours, they like to find their school up on the wall,” said Marlene. She said, “Every bedroom had a sink and so when somebody came in to wash up for dinner, they went just to the bedrooms, so that was handy. A couple of rooms we did take the sinks out because we needed more space.” The Yorba Linda women’s club, girl scouts and boy scouts and library all had their own section. In 1976, the Bryant Ranch property was purchased by a land developer.

At the trial, the judge wondered whether demonstrators outside the courtroom were using voodoo dolls or planning to hex anyone. There was a lot of discussion about what credentials one needs to be considered a “high priestess,” and some confusion when Budapest referenced the animal queendom, instead of kingdom. Budapest was not the only tarot reader arrested in a sting operation, but the others generally paid the $100 fine and got back to work.

After architect Rudolph Schindler came to California in the 1920s to oversee construction of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House, he designed his residence in West Hollywood. Some say it was the first modern house to respond to California's unique climate, serving as the prototype for the distinctive California style that developed in the early twentieth century. Many consider Neutra one of the most important twentieth-century architects and this house tour gives a chance to see his home. Schindler came to California to work for Frank Lloyd Wright and supervise construction of the Hollyhock House. The house is a private neighborhood, and there's no parking at the house. If you love arts and crafts architecture, this is the house for you.

“This sign was found at some entrance to the city,” said Marlene, pointing to the bullet holes in it. “The population at that time was 7561.” In the library, I discovered that the author Jessamyn West was from Yorba Linda. On a warm weekend, I drove over to the historic Yorba Linda ranch house, located in the middle of a regular neighborhood. Parking in front of a green fence, I walked up a paved pathway, surrounded by antique farming equipment and shrouded underneath the shade of old oak trees. Before stepping inside the museum, I stopped to admire a sun dial made out of rocks. A sign that read, “If you like history, you are going to love what you are about to see” greeted me as I entered.

They started chanting, and when there was enough energy in the room Budapest told the women to call in departed loved ones from the other side. Once the ancestors had been summoned, she told them to drop their mouths and let sound rush out. When visitors come from out-of-town and stay overnight, it is estimated that they spend $600 per night in the local economy as they rent hotel rooms, eat meals, buy tickets, use transportation, and shop. Based on this model, if the Anthony Museum draws 10,000 new visitors to Rochester, that will have an economic impact of $6 Million. After some bumps, we identified six contingent parcels that would become our building site and three more that would allow for parking and bus access to the historic properties. Located at 5700 Susanna Bryant Drive, the museum is open on Sundays from 1pm until 4pm except holiday weekends.

She founded the all-women Susan B. Anthony Coven No. 1 and was arrested for reading tarot cards in Venice when divination was still illegal across most of California. Memorializing Anthony’s life and legacy has included the creation of The Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum in Adams, Massachusetts, and The National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House in Rochester, New York. The latter is the site of her 1872 voting arrest and her death. The Susan B. Anthony House was designated as a National Historic Landmark, the highest honor given to a private home, in 1966. In 1869, Anthony and Stanton founded the National Woman Suffrage Association. Anthony was tireless in her efforts, giving speeches around the country to convince others to support a woman’s right to vote.

In a small stucco house in a retirement community near Santa Cruz, an 81-year-old witch is writing a television series. Anthony’s vote was a challenge to section one of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. She even took matters into her own hands in 1872, when she voted illegally in the presidential election. Anthony was arrested for the crime, and she unsuccessfully fought the charges; she was fined $100, which she never paid. Leaving the Canajoharie Academy in 1849, Anthony soon devoted more of her time to social issues. She was also involved in the temperance movement, aimed at limiting or completely stopping the production and sale of alcohol.

Architect Richard Neutra's private residence in Silver Lake seemed radical at the time, a glass house with rooftop and balcony gardens. It housed his office and two families on a small 60 x 70-foot lot. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important works, in a style he called "California Romantic," designed in 1917 and built between 1919 and 1923 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The complex includes the main house, garage, and one other surviving structure.
